The Importance of Homeostasis in Your Body and How CBD Can Help

Ever feel just out of whack? Do you attribute the feeling to not sleeping good although you got eight hours of sleep? Do you think perhaps you ate something that didn’t quite agree with you? These are valid thoughts; however, it could be your body is out of balance, known formally as homeostasis. CBD works to keep your body in homeostasis. Read this blog post by Herbal Pharm Rx to learn why this is so important for your body’s health.

WHAT IS HOMEOSTASIS IN THE HUMAN BODY?

The tendency to maintain a stable, relatively constant internal environment is called homeostasis. Your body wants to maintain homeostasis since this is key to a properly, well-functioning, efficient functioning body.

  • Body temperature. One of the most important ways we see this is your body’s core temperature. We all know 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit is the optimal temperature of your body’s function. In fact, your body must stay close to this temperature or the results can cause significant damage. This is why fevers are so important to control.
  • Glucose levels. Your body must maintain a steady concentration of various ions in your blood along with pH and glucose levels. If these values get too high or low, you can end up getting very sick. When our body’s pancreas doesn’t produce the right amount of insulin, your blood sugar gets out of whack. When this happens regularly, this condition is known as diabetes.

Homeostasis is important in the body overall. However, each cell and system must maintain homeostasis as well. For instance, the stomach’s pH levels are different from that of surrounding organs.

Your body is constantly being pushed outside of homeostasis by the everyday activities that we must do to survive. For instance, when you exercise, your muscles increase heat production, nudging your body temperature upward, causing you to sweat to cool down. Similarly, when you drink a glass of fruit juice, your blood glucose goes up, causing insulin to be released into the bloodstream to return the blood’s balance. Homeostasis depends on the ability of your body to detect and oppose these changes.

In the human body, homeostasis is maintained by negative feedback loops. These loops oppose the stimulus, or cue, when something is amiss. All of this is controlled by our nervous system and brain, and specifically, the hypothalamus in our brain. The hypothalamus affects many key processes in our body such as appetite, thirst, heart rate, blood pressure, and sleep cycles. Since homeostasis depends on negative feedback loops, anything that interferes with the feedback mechanisms can—and will—disrupt homeostasis. This is in essence what causes diseases.

HOW CBD CAN HELP MAINTAIN HOMEOSTASIS

CBD is short for cannabidiol, an abundant chemical in the cannabis plant. Unlike its more famous cannabinoid cousin, THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), CBD does not make you high, is legal, and is non-addictive. CBD is a natural compound derived from hemp. The body naturally creates cannabinoids to help with inflammation, unhealthy cell growth, and nerve dysfunction. Cannabinoids are produced by the human body (endocannabinoids) and by the hemp plant (phytocannabinoids).

CBD affects the endocannabinoid system (ECS), which is a complex physiological system present in all mammals that helps to maintain the body’s homeostatic processes. Studies have shown the ECS helps with pain management, inflammation, immune response, appetite, metabolism, memory, mood and emotion, and much more. The endocannabinoid system switches into gear when it senses certain imbalances in the body, and then switches back off once order has been restored to the system.

ECS works through receptors in the body: Cannabinoid receptors (such as CB1 and CB2) and Endocannabinoids, which work with cannabinoid. CBD as a cannabidiol affects these receptors to help bring your body back to homeostasis, which regulates body temperature, pain, and inflammation. The more your body is in homeostasis, the less likely you will develop diseases or your disease will affect you. CBD can mitigate the effects of various conditions like autoimmune diseases when it brings your body back in balance.

CBD indirectly promotes healthy endocannabinoid activity. And since the endocannabinoid system is directly involved in so many homeostatic processes, CBD may help give your system the boost it needs in order to continue functioning properly.

ENDOCANNABINOID IMBALANCE

Doctors now believe that many suffer from an endocannabinoid imbalance known as clinical endocannabinoid deficiency or CED. There are a number of diseases and conditions caused by homeostasis imbalance, including:

  • Diabetes and hypo- and hyperglycemia
  • Obesity
  • High blood pressure
  • Arthritis
  • Dehydration
  • Gout
  • Osteoporosis
  • Thyroid disorders, such as goiter
  • Endocrine disorders

Those suffering from CED may benefit from supplementing with CBD, or CBD oils. CBD has the ability to bind to cannabinoid receptors and restore balance. Some conditions that may be improved with CBD oils include:

  • Arthritis
  • Lupus
  • Depression
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Appetite disorders
  • Diabetes
  • Crohn’s Disease

CBD research is at an all time high. Researchers are also looking at the effects of CBD on schizophrenia and obesity, both of which are caused in part by imbalances in the ECS. Herbal Pharm Rx is excited about all these studies and how CBD and CBD oils can improve the lives of millions of people around the world suffering from the conditions discussed above. We offer CBD oils, CBD tinctures, CBD balms, and CBD gummies to help those suffering from these conditions perhaps find relief.

Herbal Pharm Rx offers CBD Edibles, which focuse on joint, inflammation, and muscle support, and CBD-Sleep, which can aid in sleep as it helps pain caused by inflammation or relieve stress as well.
