CBD and CBD products seem to be everywhere these days. CBD has crossed over to the mainstream and become commonplace, found in elixirs at restaurants, in many food products from salad dressing to chocolate, and in gummies and tinctures for everyday use. However, many people don’t know what CBD is and assume it’s illegal and associated with marijuana. Nothing could be further from the truth.
Herbal Pharm Rx, a leader in online CBD oils and CBD products including CBD tinctures and gummies, will explain some common myths and misconceptions about CBD and CBD oils.
COMMON MYTHS OF CBD
- CBD gets you high. Nothing could be further from the truth. Yes, CBD is a compound, a cannabinoid specifically, that is derived from the hemp plant, the same plant that marijuana is derived from. Here, however, is where the similarities end. Marijuana primarily uses the THC cannabinoid compound of the hemp plant. THC is psychoactive, meaning it gets you “high”; CBD does not. CBD and THC are two of over 100 cannabinoids the hemp plant produces. They interact with our endocannabinoid system (ECS), which is almost everywhere in the body, but primarily the central nervous system that receives and sends signals from cannabinoids. Our bodies also produce cannabinoids, which are called endocannabinoids. The ECS helps to regulate functions such as sleep, immune-system responses, and pain. Cannabinoids interact with the ECS through receptors. The receptors THC interact with (primarily CB1) is not the same as CBD (primarily CB2). Hence, the difference in effects.
- CBD is too good to be true. The same thing was thought when penicillin first hit the market back in 1928, and think of everything this antibiotic can do. Cannabidiol (CBD) is so versatile because it’s overall goal seems to be to maintain homeostasis (or balance) within the body. Thus, it senses the places that are imbalanced and influences them to come back into balance. Because CBD works with the ECS, which is everywhere and affects a lot of body functions, CBD has a great influence in the body. Think of CBD as a “smart” molecule, able to adapt, regulate, and modulate conditions in the body, including inflammation, blood pressure, and cancer cells which show up as abnormal cells. Research has revealed upward of 50 mechanisms of action that CBD can influence; CBD is a “multi-target” therapy that can do many things, as opposed to an analgesic pain medication, which reduces pain and nothing else. CBD can do many things in many different situations. CBD is new; it’s human nature to be sceptical.
- CBD is not safe. We’ve already discussed how CBD is different than THC, the compound that is psychoactive. In 2001, CBD was found in a study to “not induce changes on food intake, does not induce catalepsy, does not affect physiological parameters (heart rate, blood pressure and body temperature), does not affect gastrointestinal transit and does not alter psychomotor or psychological functions.” CBD is non-toxic, meaning no fatal overdose levels have ever been reported. Horror stories of CBD being unsafe stem from one cause: the CBD products were made with toxic hemp. CBD is extracted from the hemp plant. Like all plants, plants absorb nutrients from the soil. If the soil was dumped with toxic pesticides containing heavy metals, the hemp plant will absorb those toxins, resulting in the extracts from that particular plant (namely, CBD), containing those same nasty chemicals and metals. The question to ask yourself is what is the source of the hemp plants for the CBD and CBD oil-based products you are using? Was the hemp grown organically without the use of fertilizers or pesticides? If the answer is no, you are jeopardizing your health. Remember that there is no government agency that regulates CBD sales, meaning it’s up to you as a customer to do your research, ask questions, and ensure the products are safe. Herbal Pharm Rx makes CBD products with only the highest-grade and safest hemp plants to ensure safety. Our mission is to help you feel better — not worse — and that mission drive all we do.
- CBD is addictive. CBD, while a substance you are putting into your body that causes changes, does not bind to specific receptor in the brain. It is the binding that causes the habituation, tolerance, and addiction that is associated with many drugs both legal and illegal, including opioids, benzodiazepines, cocaine, and methamphetamine. Instead, CBD modulates and regulates, having none of the addictive qualities of other drugs or requiring the continued use to maintain the feeling or relief users experience. Your body does not adapt to it, resulting in the habituation of the drug, which requires more to yield the same effects. Furthermore, because CBD is not addictive and does not bind to receptors, the user can quit cold turkey with no withdrawal symptoms. That being said, the discontinued use of CBD will result in the onset of symptoms since CBD would be absent from the body.
ENSURING YOUR CBD IS SAFE
CBD is amazing in its potential effects and help with conditions that affect millions of people. However, until regulations are put in place, you the consumer need to do your due diligence to ensure what you are putting in your body is safe and effective. Simply put, the only way to verify you have quality CBD is to have your CBD third-party tested for contaminants and active ingredients — not just taking the word of the manufacturer or distributor. Look for CBD extracted from therapeutic (cannabinoid-rich) hemp, as opposed to cannabinoid-deficient industrial hemp, because it will be less likely to contain contaminants. Consider if the product is manufactured in a registered lab that follows cGMP standards and AHPA guidelines, what country it’s grown in, and if it’s certified as organic.
