WHAT IS CBD?
CBD stands for Cannabidiol. As you can probably tell from the word, Cannabidiol is derived from cannabis, the main ingredient in marijuana. However, this is where the similarities end between CBD and marijuana. CBD is a non-intoxicating cannabis extract that is used to treat a variety of medical problems and conditions — everything from epileptic seizures and anxiety to inflammation and problems sleeping.
HOW IS CBD MADE?
Cannabidiol is extracted from the flowers and buds of marijuana or hemp plants. It does not produce intoxication; marijuana’s “high” is caused by the chemical tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). CBD oils are the liquid form of these extracts. What it boils down to is CBD oil is like any other plant extract. However, the chemicals in the extracts can vary based on how it’s made and the particular plant itself.
Cannabis plants produce two compounds (out of 104) you need to know: THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) and CBD (cannabidiol). THC is the compound that produce intoxicating effects. CBD does not contain THC, thus does produce these same effects. CBD is the compound many search out specifically for its medical benefits. Thus, since CBD does not contain THC, it is not considered an illegal drug and it falls outside of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency’s (DEA) Controlled Substances Act.
IS CBD LEGAL?
While CBD is legal in all 50 states, there are some cases where it’s not legal. When it’s not legal, it all has to do with which compound the CBD is derived from: hemp or marijuana.
WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN HEMP AND MARIJUANA?
Hemp and marijuana are part of the cannabis family; however, they are two different plants with different characteristics. They thrive in different environments as well. The main difference, however, between hemp and marijuana plants is their chemical composition. Marijuana has the high THC compound that is the chemical responsible for its psychological effects. An average batch of marijuana contains anywhere from 5-20% THC content. Some premium marijuana can have up to 25-30% THC content. Hemp, on the other hand, has a max THC level of 0.3%, so low it would be impossible to feel any mind-altering effects or “high” from it.
Hemp plants are completely legal; marijuana, on the other hand, is a different story. Hence, hemp-derived CBD is legal in all 50 states. Marijuana-derived CBD is considered a by-product of marijuana and thus faces regulations.
WHAT DOES CBD TREAT?
CBD oil has been shown to treat epilepsy, reducing seizures in some cases to zero. CBD oil is also used as a pain reliever and to treat inflammation. CBD also can be used as an antipsychotic, antidepressant, and a sleep aid. Because CBD oil use is still in its infancy, the medical possibilities have yet to be fully explored. CBD has the potential to treat arthritis, diabetes, alcoholism, MS, chronic pain, schizophrenia, PTSD, depression, antibiotic-resistant infections, and other neurological disorders. CBD could also be a key future ingredient in the fight against cancer and as a cancer-relieving agent of the common side effects of cancer treatments such as nausea and vomiting caused by chemotherapy.
One study found that multiple sclerosis sufferers experience increased mobility, reduced muscle spasms, and a decrease in pain when treated with a combination of CBD and THC for one month; while another study demonstrated CBD and THC improved pain management for those with rheumatoid arthritis. While these studies included THC components, Hemp Pharm RX will be keeping you up-to-date on all the new studies, which show the benefits of CBD consumption on medical conditions. Due to its inflammatory-fighting agents, CBD has been shown effective in treating acne as well.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration so far has approved the CBD medication Epidiolex to treat two rare forms of childhood epilepsy. Hemp Pharm RX predicts this is the first in a long line of medications using CBD oils to receive FDA approval.
In sum, CBD is:
- Counteracts psychoactivity of THC
- Has calming effects
- Lowers blood sugar
- Combats pain, MS, stress, inflammation, sleep loss, and epilepsy
IS CBD REGULATED?
CBD currently is not regulated due to the fact that the effects of CBD oils vary widely from person to person. Part of this is how CBD is consumed. Since CBD outcomes cannot be predicted, the US government cannot recommend the oils for consumer use. Smoking CBD oils has better predicted results, but because it is smoked, the US government cannot recommend this either since we all know the health pitfalls of smoking.
WHAT ARE THE SIDE EFFECTS OF CBD?
Unlike THC, CBD has no addictive qualities. Since CBD is in its infancy, the side effects are technically unknown. However, most users report little to no side effects when using CBD products. Like with any substance, a small percentage of users have reported nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, bloating, and dizziness. Furthermore, an even smaller percentage of users have had to discontinue with CBD oil altogether due to suspected liver damage. CBD oil could interact with common prescription medications.
All medicines have some side effects — even aspirin, so it’s important you always seek the advice of your doctor before trying a new treatment plan.
HOW IS CBD CONSUMED?
When all cannabidiols are consumed, they bind to receptors throughout the brain and body. The cannabidiols have different effects, depending on which receptors they bind to. THC binds to receptors in the brain; CBD binds to receptors throughout the body. Here is where herbal cannabis comes into play. Herbal cannabis has been shown to have even more therapeutic relief possibilities as they have more compounds than synthetic or other forms of CBD.
CBD oil is most commonly available as a tincture, which is a liquid form. It can be taken orally, added to water, smoothies, protein drinks, or any other liquid, or chewed in foods produced with CBD oils added such as Gummy Treats. A spray form is available as are capsules and topical creams. E-liquid for vape pens in order to smoke CBD can be procured as well.
When it comes to dosage, you should start with the smallest possible dose and gradually build up based on your particular condition. The effects of CBD are immediate, so you will be able to tell if the lower dosage is working for you. As always, it’s best to consult your doctor before trying any new medication or adding any new treatment plan.
ARE CBD OILS FOR ME?
If you suffer from a health condition that traditional drugs and other treatments seem to not be helping, CBD oils could be for you. Since it’s hard to say how effective CBD oils would be in your particular case, Hemp Pharm RX recommends trying CBD oils to see how they affect you under the instruction of a medical doctor who is much better equipped to gauge effectiveness.
Herbal Pharm Rx encourages you to ask yourself the question: is CBD helping me? Does the potential benefits outweigh the risk of side effects? How much does my condition bother me? How much will my quality of life improve using CBD-based products?
Herbal Pharm Rx understands the hesitancy to try something new. It’s ingrained in humans to not trust something until it’s tested. This was the case with automobiles in the late nineteenth century, Thomas Edison’s light bulb, coffee, airplanes, umbrellas, and personal computers. All were feared, avoided, or even vilified — mainly due to ignorance and preconceived notions. Can you imagine life today without your morning coffee and computer?
